There are two main versions of Java in use today: 1.1 and 1.2, the latter being also referred to as Java2. The latter version is preferable because the appearance as well as the behavior of visual elements is more consistent across platforms and because it has new features which make the security much more flexible. The trade-off is lagging support. Java 1.1 is supported by the popular browsers in use today, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Java 1.2 is not directly supported in the current versions, but indirect support can be added by downloading and installing a plug-in. Netscape (Mozilla - the open source version - to be more precise) has announced support for Java2 in their forthcoming release of Netscape Navigator 5.0.
